The Calcutta Gymkhana means The Calcutta Gymkhana Tennis Club , which was established in the year - 1930. The club is located at 4/1A, Suhrawardy Avenue, Kolkata – 700017, which is in close proximity to the Park Circus Maidan and Lady Brabourne College. Initially, the club was affiliated with The Bengal Hockey Association, Cricket Association of Bengal and Indian Football Association. During World War II (Sept. 1939 to Sept. 1945), all club activities came to a stop and the lawn and the pavilion were badly damaged. Thereafter, everything had to be started from scratch, with the main activity being tennis only. With great endeavour and against heavy odds, a nursery of tennis was begun and improvements were gradually implemented to enhance the status and the sporting reputation of the club.
Special mention has to be made of Late Mr. S. K. Sen, Late Mr. Ashutosh Bhattacharjee, Late Mr. A. K. Chatterji and Mr. S. B. Moitra, who have in the glorious past, worked sincerely and tirelessly to maintain the highest standards in keeping our club flag proudly and honourably flying. Grateful acknowledgement to Late Mr. R. N. Khaitan, who magnanimously donated the club house and main building, to the club.
The eminently noted players, that have been produced by our club are :
1] Late Mr. Dilip Bose, the first Asian Tennis Champion.
2] Mr. Jaideep Mukherjee, Davis Cupper and national level player.
3] Mr. S. Akhtar Ali – National Champion, Davis Cupper and Davis Cup Team Coach.
4] Mr. S. Zeeshan Ali – National Champion, Davis Cupper and Davis Cup Team Coach. He started his tennis career at our club.
